Preparing For Your Personal Portrait Session

Getting ready shouldn’t be so complicated. After doing the work of selecting a photographer, getting ready can sometimes seem like a chore. I share these tips with my personal portrait clients as a reminder of some things that tend to get overlooked.

Hands and Feet

If you normally do your nails, get a manicure and pedicure before you session (or DIY at home). Your hands especially — and sometimes feet as well — will show in many of your images and we don’t want chipped polish!

Spray Tans and Tanlines

For paler skin, I don’t recommend a spray tan, as it will affect how your skin tone will photograph. For all skin tones, you should also stay out of the sun to avoid any changes in skin lightness or coloration before your session. Retouching of streaks, tanlines and sunburns is usually not something included in standard retouching, and may cost extra if it is. And definitely consult your photographer for best practices, here. For example, warming your skin to a beautiful glow is a standard part of my remastering workflow, so there’s generally no need for heavy natural or artificial tanning ahead of time.

Hair color and eyebrows

Having freshly colored hair and neatly trimmed eyebrows – if that’s your thing – will make you feel like a supermodel during your session! This is typically something you will want to do prior to the day of the session.

Day of your session
  • Arrive with a clean face for your makeup appointment. It’s always helpful to do a light exfoliation on your face, even with just a washcloth. Let the makeup artist know if you have any skin or eye sensitivities, and feel free to bring some inspiration photos for your makeup look.
  • Use clear deodorant & moisturize your body before your session.
  • Don’t forget to eat something and drink lots of water the day before.
  • A good night’s sleep will ensure you are refreshed for your photoshoot.

Following these tips will help you feel fully ready for your next portrait session. And if you’d like to learn more about my approach to capturing your unique beauty, let’s connect for a free consultation!
