Give Me a Break!

Oh, you may have never said it out loud. You’re too committed to the people in your life, too hard-working, too supportive, too “good”. But I know you’ve thought it, or even said it to yourself when no one was listening.

With all you do for others, you are too important to get burned out and depleted. Here are 5 tips on how to give yourself a break from all of life’s busyness to refresh, recharge and reconnect.

Schedule it.

You can verbally commit to something, but until it’s on your calendar, it’s not as “real.” Scheduling some “me time” on your calendar sends a subconscious signal to your brain that your break is worthy of making space in your life for.

Just Say No.

Saying “yes” to your time means saying “no” to anything else that may try to soak up that time. Saying “no” may mean letting the kids know ahead of time that you won’t be driving them anywhere just before or during your break.

Get Physical.

Sitting at home binging may sound relaxing, and can certainly be, but often the quickest way to shift your mood is to get out and be active doing something you love. Walking, swimming, running, and other forms of exercise can be incredibly relaxing. But it doesn’t have to be exercise. Maybe a drive alone in nature, or going out with friends for lunch or cocktails. The point is to be active doing something that’s fun for you. Speaking of…

Do Something Fun.

What brings you joy? Working on a project around the house? Planting something new in the garden? Getting lost in a great book? Dancing to your favorite music? Whatever it is, be intentional about filling your “me time” with something you truly enjoy. Trying something new can also be a great way to give yourself a break from the routine of life. Never been Salsa dancing? Or picked strawberries? Finding something new (and maybe a little adventurous) to do will most always recharge you.

Reconnect.

Much of what we call self-care is about reconnecting with yourself, and that’s vital. It can also be refreshing to renew your connection with close friends, or even non-to-close. Spending quality time (in person when possible) with someone fuels us, regardless if you are introverted or extroverted. Just make sure it’s someone you really want to build relationship with, and that just the act of reaching out to them will be meaningful to you.

I hope these suggestions will help you maintain a healthy rhythm in your life, and encourage you to give yourself the gift that you so deserve!
